Assistant/Associate Professor of Forestry

Status: Full-Time/Nine-Month Appointment, Exempt, Faculty

Start Date: Fall Semester 2025

Department: Forestry

Reports to: Dean of Faculty

Salary: $52,000.00 - $64,000.00

College Background:

Paul Smith’s College is a small, private baccalaureate and associate degree-granting institution located on the shores of Lower St. Regis Lake, within the 6 million-acre Adirondack Park of northern New York State. The College owns 14,000 acres of surrounding lands and manages them as part of its commitment to providing students with outstanding experiential learning.

Students in our Forestry programs utilize and also participate in the management of College lands, including active timber-harvests, a commercial sugarbush, and numerous forest research and demonstration sites. Through a range of courses, forestry students actively plant, tend, measure, monitor, harvest, mill, and study forest resources in two-year and four-year curricula.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Academic:
    • Teach Introduction to Forestry, Woodlot Management, Forest Management.
    • Teach or support other courses and/or lab sections depending on qualifications.
    • Academic and career advising of students.
  • Professional Development:
    • Research, outreach, and/or professional society engagement.
    • Continuing education.
  • Service:
    • Working with student clubs and pursuing other community engagement.
    • Administrative duties (e.g., various committees).

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in forestry or related field (Ph.D. preferred).
  • Training and practical experience in forestry topics.
    • GIS, general ecology, and/or wetlands, are particularly valued.
  • Experience with and commitment to teaching and guiding undergraduate students.
    • Meeting the educational needs of students with a wide range of backgrounds, interests, and abilities is essential to our programs.
  • Record of productive research/outreach and professional development.
